What is Rohatsu?

Rohatsu, or Bodhi Day, is a Zen Buddhist holiday, commemorating Siddhartha Gautama’s enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. This pivotal moment marked the culmination of Siddhartha’s six-year journey, leading him to understand the nature of suffering and the path to liberation, thus becoming the Buddha. Traditionally, Rohatsu is observed with a meditation retreat called “Rohatsu Sesshin,” where participants meditate for nearly a week, culminating in all-night meditation on the final day.
